Who is Mohamed Salah?

Mohamed Salah is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers to have played the game. The Liverpool striker has played in the Premier League since 2014 and has developed from a whizz-kid winger to a prolific goal threat that strikes fear into the heart of any stalwart soccer defender.

In the last year, Salah has also undergone another radical transformation. Eagle-eyed Liverpool fans have noticed that Salah’s hair looks visibly different from last season, leaving many wondering whether he has had a hair transplant.

Mo Salah and Hair Loss: Male Pattern Baldness

Until recently, Mo Salah has shown telltale signs of male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia). This is where patients first suffer from a receding hairline, before experiencing thinning hair on the crown. In severe cases, male pattern hair loss can cause total balding on the head.

Despite having a thick and full head on the majority of his head, Mo Salah has had an obvious signs of a receding hairline. In pictures from years gone by, you will be able to observe a distinct “m-shaped” hairline. This is where a man recedes in the temple areas, while maintaining hair on the frontal hairline.

Male pattern baldness is a very common condition that affects around 40% of men by the age of 40 years old. Pattern hair loss does affect young men as early as 25, so it’s no surprise that Mo Salah has shown signs of this condition.

But what would have possessed Mo Salah to have a hair transplant? Well, we can’t know for sure. However, many of the patients who visit Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics come to our clinics looking to restore their hairlines and improve their appearance and self-confidence.

Mo Salah’s Hair Transformation: Has He Had a Hair Transplant?

While we’ll never know for sure the exact information about Mo Salah’s hair transformation, it is safe to assume that he has had a hair transplant. This is because we can clearly see that his hairline is thicker and signs of temple recession have been reversed.

Comparing newer photos against older ones shows Mo Salah’s hairline to have had some work done to it. The older “m-shape” has been reversed and there is a much straighter look to the hairline on newer photos.

Mo Salah before and after hair transplantThis suggests Mo has, in fact, had a hair transplant! This is because no other hair loss treatment can effectively reverse and reshape a hairline in the same way as a hair transplant procedure. Medications such as Minoxidil and DHT-Blockers (Finasteride & Dutasteride) would have only slowed signs of Mo’s hair loss. They would not have restored and re-shaped his hairline.

What Happens During Hair Transplant Surgery?

The most common method of hair surgery is called an FUE Hair Transplant. As we believe Mo Salah would most likely have had a DHI or FUE hair transplant, we’ll give you a deep dive into the methodology underpinning the FUE procedure.

During a hair transplant, hair follicles are taken from the donor area (this is the name we give to the hair on the back and sides of the head) and implanted onto a recipient site. In Mo’s case, the recipient site would have been his his hairline. However, in more severe cases, the crown area could also be a recipient site.

Hair follicles are extracted individually and separated into grafts. These grafts are then counted and categorised into “singles”, “doubles”, and “triples”. This numeration helps the hair transplant surgeon assess how many har follicles are in each graft and use them within the surgery.

From here, a small series of incisions are made in the recipient site and then the grafts are implanted into each incision site.

Smaller hair grafts (“singles”) are placed toward the front of the hairline as they are perfect for shaping and giving an authentic appearance to the new hairline. Larger grafts (“doubles” and “triples”) are place further back in the temples. This helps to create a full and thick look to the new hairline whilst also blending seamlessly into the patient’s existing hair.

FUE Hair Transplant or FUT Hair Transplant: What Type of Surgery has Mo Salah Had?

Although it’s often difficult to tell whether a person has had a DHI or FUE hair transplant, it is often easy to determine they have undergone FUT. This is because FUT (Follicular unit transplantation) leaves patients with a lifelong linear strip scar on the back of the scalp.

To the best of our knowledge, Mo Salah does not show any sign of having a scar on the back of his scalp, ruling out FUT as a potential hair transplant method. What makes this more obvious is that Mo happily shaves the back and sides of his head, making it obvious to people he has not had FUT.

This would suggest Mo has more than likely had a minimally invasive form of hair transplant such as FUE (follicular unit extraction) or DHI (direct hair implantation). His donor area shows little sign (to the untrained eye) that he has had a surgery.

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation): Could Mo Salah Have Had a DHI Hair Transplant?

Perhaps the most likely hair transplant method Mo Salah would have opted for would be the DHI method. When compared to FUE, DHI hair transplants boast a quicker recovery period, a quicker procedure on the day, and a slightly higher graft survival rate.

DHI tends to be the choice of many high profile athletes for these three reasons. Being in competitive sport means an athlete is likely to have minimal downtime. The surgery and recovery period needs to be quick so an athlete can get back to training as soon as possible.

It’s likely that Mo Salah may have had his hair transplant while on international duty or during off-season. This helps explain why we all saw the a dramatic change in his appearance and his new haircut. A surgery scuh as DHI would have enabled him to reshape his hairline and get back into the public eye as quickly as possible.

Conclusion

Mo Salah’s hair has been the topic of intense debate. That’s because many Liverpool fans believe Mo had a hair transplant at the end of the last Premier League season. Salah’s new look can be explained by the fact that he has had a hair transplant. The most likely method Salah would have opted for would be FUE or DHI. It is unlikely he would have opted for FUT.
