The cost of a hair transplant in the UK varies depending typically on a couple of factors:
- the amount of hair loss,
- the area(s) that it is located in and
- the hair type (afro hair tends to be much trickier to extract and implant so carries an extra cost)
The NHS website states that the cost varies from £1,000 to £30,000 which is quite a large bracket that most (if not all uk clinics) fall in. Typically most clinics will start from around £3,000.
Our Hair Transplant Costs
How much does a hair transplant cost with Harley Street? This is a frequently asked question. Our pricing starts from £3,000 for very minor cases and can go up to £7,000 for major cases.
Because again that range is quite a broad one and only covers the cost of 1 procedure, we are going to go a bit further in explaining the costs for the various factors that affect the cost of a hair transplant.
We are not the cheapest nor the most expensive, however we believe we are very competitively and fairly priced given that we operate a surgeon lead approach and NOT a technician lead approach as some cheaper providers do. We believe we have achieved the correct balance of value for money.
How Do We Calculate the Cost of a Hair Transplant
To calculate the cost of a hair transplant, we firstly look at the area of hair loss along with the donor area of the head. This will determine if the patient is a good candidate for a hair transplant. We then classify the area of hair loss via the norwood scale for men and the ludwig scale for women. This will then give us an idea of the amount of grafts that are needed in order to achieve a natural looking hair transplant so that the patient is happy with the results. It will also give us an idea of the amount of work involved and be able to give a fairly accurate price.
The best way to get an accurate price for any type of hair transplant procedure is to have a free one on one consultation with one of our expert consultants at Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics London.
Cost of a FUE Hair Transplant
The follicular unit extraction (or fue) procedure is the most common one as it’s the latest and best hair transplant procedure where individual hairs (or hair follicles) are taken from the donor area and transplanted to the areas of hair loss. It takes time and skill from our surgeon and team. The majority of our procedures are done via this method and the average cost is around £5,500 currently.
Cost of a Beard Transplant
We tend to use the same procedure for beard transplants as hair transplants. Typically the cost of a beard transplant is between £3,500 and £6,000 again, depending on the of hair that needs to be transplanted.
Cost of an Eyebrow Transplant
Just like hair and beard transplants, we use the FUE procedure for eyebrow transplants. These tend to cost on average around £4,500 as they are one of the focal points of a person’s face and thus we have to take more time to get the detail and design correct as the “devil is in the details” as they say.

Graft Number Costs at Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics
This is typically one of the lowest graft numbers and are usually for eyebrow transplants. The cost is usually around £3,000 – £3,500 depending on the amount of work involved.
We are on eyebrow and beard territory with these grafts numbers as well as some small hairline work. Typically the cost is around £4,000 – £4,500 depending on the amount of work involved.
Moving onto more dense beard transplants as well as fuller hairlines. The cost is around £4,500 – £5,000 depending on the amount of work involved.
This is pretty much an average amount of grafts that the majority of our patients require. It is usually receding hairline work or crown work. The cost is typically around £5,500 – £6,000.
Moving onto larger areas of hair loss now, 2,500 grafts is where either multiple areas get covered or one larger area that requires coverage and some density. The cost is typically around £6,000 – £6,500.
3,000 grafts is the maximum number of grafts that we recommend and perform in one procedure. This is to protect the donor hair from over harvesting and to aid in healing and recovery time. The cost for this is typically around £6,500 – £7,000.
Now we are entering the 2 stage procedure territory regarding hair transplants as typically a 4,000 graft procedure means extensive hair loss. We would split a 4,000 graft procedure into 2 stages in order to achieve the best possible result keeping the patient’s health in mind and top priority when it comes to healing of their donor area. The price would be around £9,500 – £10,000.
Now we are definitely entering the 2 stage procedure territory regarding hair transplants as typically a 5,000 graft procedure means extensive hair loss. We would split a 5,000 graft procedure into 2 stages in order to achieve the best possible result keeping the patient’s health in mind and top priority when it comes to healing of their donor area. The price would be around £11,000 – £12,000.
The “typical” life cycle of a hair transplant is around 10 years. However, with an exceptional aftercare routine coupled with hair loss medication when required, there is no reason why your hair transplant result can’t last longer!
Hair Transplant Cost by Surface Area
Hairline and Temples Transplant Cost
A receding hairline typically requires between 1,500 and 2,000 grafts. If you add the temple area into the mix, as we have found that a large number of patients typically have temple recession as well as hairline recession, then the graft numbers go to around 1,800 to 2,500.
The cost of a hairline hair transplant with us is usually around the £4,500 to £5,000 with the lower amount being for a smaller sized surface area of around 1,500 grafts and with the larger amount being around £5,500 to £6,000 when roughly 2,500 grafts are required.

Crown Hair Transplant Cost
A balding crown ranges quite a lot in surface area size. We typically see anything from a small area that is thinning up to a very large area that requires the full 3,000 grafts. Hair follicles in the crown area are known to not have as good of a blood supply than the hairline, so they can require more grafts in order to achieve density and coverage.
The cost of a large crown hair transplant will range from around £6,500 to ££7,000 for a large surface area that requires 3,000 grafts. A smaller one will typically be around 2,000 grafts and will cost roughly £5,500. There are instances where the crown thinning is it’s early stages and so we may recommend hair loss medication such as finasteride in order to stabilise and see how much the hair can thicken up, but these are few and far in between.

Finance Options
We are now offering a couple of hair transplant finance options from our finance partners. This is to help spread the cost over into more manageable monthly payments for our patients over a 12 month period with 0% APR.
True Cost Vs Value of Hair Transplants
Hair transplant costs are typically the highest in the hair loss / hair restoration market. The main reasons for this are the time, skill and responsibility of care that goes with it when comparing to other treatments that cost less. It is also one of a handful of clinically proven treatments that work for hair growth.
We understand very well that losing your hair can have a devastating psychological impact regarding self confidence and image/identity irrespective of the amount of hair loss experienced.
There are of course other treatments to solve this such as wearing a wig/toupe or going for a hair replacement system (in essence a glued on wig with real hair). These solutions have one thing in common: they are NOT permanent as they require ongoing maintenance. In fact when looking at the true cost of a hair transplant vs wigs/toupes/hair replacement systems, a hair transplant should be cheaper throughout a person’s lifetime. It just seems more expensive because of the larger initial lump sum cost compared with the other solutions. A comparison:
- Average cost of a hair transplant with us: around £5,500. Ongoing cost: 0. Replacement period: 0.
- Hair replacement system. Cost: between £500 – £1200 depending on area(s) of coverage (Let’s say £800 average). On going cost: £500. Replacement period: once every 6 months roughly.
That means that by your 10th hair replacement system (after roughly 5 years), you have paid as much as the average cost of a hair transplant with us, however you will have continued ongoing costs.
Also, you will not have that anxiety/fear in the back of your mind that “what if my hair system falls off” as with a hair transplant, your own hair follicles are implanted into your scalp giving that boost in self confidence and freedom from the worry and anxiety of hair loss.
The Risks of Choosing a Cheap Hair Transplant
We have found that a lot of patients have the price as one of the first things in their minds. This is valid when comparing different clinics and their pricing as all patients don’t want to feel like they haven’t got value for money. So naturally the question that we get asked is why are you more expensive than X clinic ? Patients will ask this question as fundamentally, well all want to not pay more for the same thing.
This is why educating patients on comparing like for like is key as most comparisons made are not comparing apples to apples so to speak. The dangers of going for a low cost hair transplant clinic are typically:
- You will be receiving a technician lead service. – Technicians are an important part of surgery and they have their place, however they should NOT be performing all parts of the transplant with the doctor supervising. This is how costs are kept low as multiple patients are done on the day and so quality control will slip.
- You may receive a surgeon lead approach, however the experience and expertise of the surgeon will be of a brand new surgeon that is learning the ropes and so you may not get the result you are hoping for or the growth that you wished for.
- You will probably receive little to no aftercare. Aftercare is an important part of the process in order to determine how you are healing and if you are headed in the right direction. In order to cut costs, low cost providers will often skip this part.
The above factors are why it’s very important to do your research and we would recommend to always go with a surgeon lead clinic. You will pay more in price but it will cost you less over time.

Surgeon Experience and Price
The experience and expertise of a surgeon will influence the cost just like in any other profession. You are paying for time. Specifically the time it has taken the surgeon to gain their experience through previous patient surgeries arms them with that knowledge that most patients want. To get their hair transplant done once and for all so that there is no need to come back again. This is how patients can also save on costs long term by only having 1 hair transplant instead of multiple where possible.
Our surgeons have collectively almost 20 years worth of experience in performing hair transplants on all areas such as the hairline, temples, bridge (middle of the scalp) and crown as well as eyebrow and beard transplants. They have also performed transplants for transgender patients and afro-caribbean patients using a full shave or a partial shave approach where possible.
It is important to have a 1-to-1 consultation with your surgeon in order to get a graft number assessment which will determine the cost of your hair transplant. At Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics, we always arrange a surgeon consult prior to surgery in order to assess the patient’s donor area to determine eligibility and graft count for an accurate price.

Hair Transplant Cost FAQs
The NHS states that you can get a hair transplant and pay between £1,000 and £30,000. This is quite a large price scope. From our research, we have found that there are 3 types of hair transplant clinics in the UK. They are:
- The cheap clinics where, as discussed above, may offer a technician lead service or an inexperienced doctor lead service. These range from £1,995 to £3,500. The average cost tends to be around £2,700.
- The great value for money clinics where they offer an experienced doctor lead service at a fair price. We believe that we fall in this category. Our research suggests that pricing ranges from £3,000 to £9,000 with the average price being around £6,000.
- Finally there are the very premium clinics where they may have a high media profile doctor that has performed hair transplants on celebrities and so the price tends to also go more premium. Our research suggests that their pricing ranges from £5,000 to £20,000 with the average price being around £12,000.
The main factors that influence the cost of a hair transplant are:
- The size of the surface area of hair loss. The larger the area, the more costly it will be as more grafts are required to achieve coverage and density.
- The area to be transplanted and the type of hair to be transplanted. Afro hair tends to be more difficult so the price is more expensive as it takes longer.
- The donor quality and availability. The more dense and available, the easier a procedure tends to be and so the price won’t rise like it does with sparser donor areas that still qualify for a hair transplant.
- The experience and expertise of your surgeon and whether they are leading the surgery or supervising.
- If the hair transplant is a repair job or if it’s a hair transplant over a scar. These tend to be much harder and so the price reflects this difficulty.
Most patients choose us because when comparing to other similar clinics that offer a highly experienced, doctor lead surgery, our price is for the most part more competitive.
We also offer a full aftercare package to go along with your hair transplant as well as very prompt and reliable communication between you the patient and our patient co-ordinators and doctors.
Combine these 2 elements and you have a recipe for a very successful hair transplant.
You really have to ask yourself the question of price vs cost, meaning: “Do I want to pay a cheaper price now and potentially pay a more expensive cost in the future or do I want to pay a more expensive price now but a cheaper cost in the future?”. This is the main question to ask yourself when choosing a hair transplant clinic.
Based on this, we would recommend to not only look at the price but to also look at:
- The patient reviews on independent platforms such as Trustpilot as well as any before and after photos of previous patients.
- Ask for the qualifications, credentials and experience of the surgeons. A surgeon consultation is also highly recommended in order to see if you have chosen the right surgeon for you.
- The aftercare support that is available by the clinic.
