What is a DHI hair transplant?
Direct hair implantation (DHI) is the latest hair transplant method used by surgeons to combat hair thinning and hair loss. It uses a special implanter tool called the Choi implanter pen to extract and implant follicles directly from the donor area into the area of hair loss (hence “direct hair implantation”). It is a more expensive method of hair transplant as it’s a slower method than the FUE method as it is just the doctor doing all the work whereas with FUE the nurses/technicians also help out more.
In many ways, FUE and DHI hair transplants work the same way. Hair follicles are extracted from your donor area and then implanted into your recipient area. Your recipient area may be anything from your your crown, mid-parting, to your crown area.
How does a DHI Hair Transplant Work?
If you require a reshaping of the hairline, the surgeon may mark out the recipient area with a marker pen. This may help to bring the hairline down to a typical length to the eyebrows (5-7cm).
- The doctor will design the hairline with a marker pen when needed whilst discussing this with the patient and making sure that they are happy.
- The nurses/technicians will shave the patient’s donor area in order to be prepped for the procedure. The doctor will then administer the local anaesthetic to numb the area and make the patient feel comfortable during the procedure.
- The surgeon will then begin extracting one graft at a time from the donor area using a hair transplant extraction machine. The extracted grafts will then be handled, counted and sorted by the technicians.
- The technicians will then begin to load each follicle into a special tool called the Choi pen and hand it to the surgeon to use for implanting the extracted hairs. Around 3-4 Choi pens are used at any one time as whilst the surgeon is implanting, the technicians are loading the other Choi pens ready to be used for the next graft.
- After the procedure, the hair transplant surgeon will bandage your head and provide you with antibiotics and painkillers for use as part of your hair transplant aftercare package.
Why get a DHI Hair Transplant?
Did you know that 80% of men suffer with hair thinning over the course of their lifetime? In extension, conditions such as pattern baldness can affect men and women equally, resulting in low self-esteem and feelings of self-consciousness.
DHI hair transplantation is a fantastic solution for anyone suffering with hair loss. Whether you have got a receding hairline, a thinning mid parting, or hair loss on your crown, this surgical procedure can solve your hair loss concerns and really help boost your self confidence.
Why get DHI over other hair transplant methods?
DHI and FUE hair transplant procedures are a great alternative to older methods such as FUT. With follicular unit transplantation (FUT), patients are left with a linear scar on their scalp -this is where your donor hair follicles have been extracted. As a result, FUT requires a longer procedure time (as the hairs extracted from your donor strip have to be separated under a microscope) and a longer recovery (waiting for your scar to heal). It may even be that unsightly scars left after FUT may never fully heal.
With FUE and DHI hair transplantation, your hair follicles are extracted individually and no linear scar is left after the procedure. Instead, the extraction of individual hairs leaves smaller scabs on your recipient area that typically heal fully within 7 to 10 days.
Furthermore, DHI was developed to speed up the FUE hair transplant process! What separates DHI from FUE is the extraction/implantation tool that negates the need for surgeons to map out where new grafts need to be implanted, making it the most advanced hair restoration technology available today.
Our clinics have also found that direct hair implantation produces less bleeding and scabbing in the recipient area. This means you will be looking your best in no time!
How much does a DHI hair transplant surgery cost?
A DHI hair transplant is the most expensive procedure we offer at our clinics. Typically, this procedure costs anywhere from £4,500 – £8,500+. However, such a variation in cost is dependent upon your own severity of balding. It is difficult to predict how costly a DHI hair transplant will be as every patent is different and requires different needs.
In an attempt to make our hair transplants more accessible, our clinics offer a range of different payment methods. If you need to, you can spread the cost of your hair transplant over a 12 or 24 month period. We believe no one should be priced out of a hair transplant procedure!
Frequently Asked Questions
As with any surgical process, there are some risks posed. Post-operation infections are said to affect less than 1% of patients (NLM 2018). Similarly, for a few days after your surgery, you may feel a little bit of discomfort as your head heals.
However, it is important to note that a hair transplant is one of the safest surgical procedures. Side effects are rare and all of our procedures are performed in CQC clinics by GMC registered surgeons with years of experience.
DHI can be used to treat any of the following: hair loss, hair thinning, male pattern baldness, female pattern baldness. Generally it treats the same stages of hair loss as the FUE method.
