Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics patient with crown recession before and after procedure

Baldness is a problem that can affect all areas on the face and head. Often caused by male pattern baldness, hair loss on the crown of the head can be one of the most infuriating issues men can deal with. Crown hair transplant surgery is the only long term solution that provides you with a long-term, natural looking result.

What Causes the Crown to Bald?

The “crown” is found at the top of the head, heading slightly towards the rear. When it comes to balding, one of the first areas to suffer hair loss is the crown. Hair loss inn this area is often caused by a process called “male pattern baldness” (androgenic alopecia). This is where excess dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is produced by the body and combines to the hair follicles on your head; this disrupts the growth cycle of the hair on your head, causing irreversible shedding.

What’s worse is that this process of hair loss becomes more prevalent as men age and there is nothing we can do to prevent it. Male pattern hair loss is a heredity condition and many men experience crown hair loss as early as 30.

What is a Crown Hair Transplant?

When it comes to hair loss, getting hair transplant surgery is the only option that offers a long-term, natural solution for patients. A crown hair transplant looks to take existing hair on your head, and implant this into your affected area.

Different patients often show different severity of balding and it is this that usually dictates the course of treatment required. For those experiencing thinning, a lighter course of PRP treatment may be all that is needed. Equally, for those who have suffered extensive balding, an FUT or FUE hair transplant may be required.

All hair transplants at Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics are carried out by GMC registered doctors at CQC clinics. We want you to rest assured that our procedures are clean, safe, and carried out by experienced professionals.

How does a Crown Hair Transplant Work?

Before your surgery, Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics offers a free consultation with one of our consultants. At this phase, your treatment course, costs, and location of procedure will all be determined.

During a typical hair transplant surgery, you will first be given a local anaesthetic by the surgeon so you won’t feel anything. From here hair follicles are taken from a donor area (typically the back of the scalp) and implanted into a recipient area (in this instance, the crown). Depending on the severity of your baldness, this will determine the number of follicles (or “grafts”) needed. Obviously, if the crown is completely bald, it will need more grafts than one showing early signs of hair loss or thinning.

After the hair transplant procedure, you will be provided with a full aftercare package that will guide you through recovery. Your recovery time will be based around your course of treatment, and number of grafts implanted. Less invasive treatments (such as FUE) should leave you recovering for 7-10 days whilst more invasive treatments (such as FUT) may leave a scar that takes a few weeks to heal. We typically perform FUE transplants on the majority of our patients.

When it comes to results, your should expect to wait between 4-6 months. This gives your new hair follicles to grow naturally. Your crown should start looking thicker and fuller in no time!

What Treatment options are Available?

There are a number of different hair transplants available to solve crown hair loss. Here, we’ve devised a quick list to help you along the way.

  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) – Using brand new technology, a FUE hair transplant is minimally invasive and offers the highest yield of hair regrowth. Extracting individual follicles hair from a donor area and implanting them into your affected area, this treatment boasts a swift procedure, short recovery time, and a minimal amount of scarring.
  • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) – Often called the “strip method”, a FUT hair transplant is the “original” hair loss procedure. Tried and tested over decades of use, this surgical procedure takes larger strips of hair from the back of your head, separates the strip into smaller grafts under microscope, and implants these onto your affected area.

When it comes to costing and prices, hair transplants can differ greatly in price. As stated above, this is dependent upon what treatment you have and how many grafts are needed. The average cost of a typical hair transplant is around £5,500.

At Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics, we’re committed to offering a quality crown hair transplant procedure at a fair price. That is why we’ve also developed affordable payment plans over the course of 12 to 60 months. No one should ever be priced out of a crown hair transplant!

Why Get a Crown hair transplant?

When compared to other treatment methods, there is nothing else available on the market that restores hair and prevents further hair loss like hair transplantation. Booking yourself in for crown hair restoration surgery can be one of the best things you can do to boost your self-confidence and appearance.

When it comes to alternative hair treatments, most patients come to us having already tried drugs like minoxidil and finasteride. Whilst these help to maintain hair density whilst you take them as supplements, as soon as you finish taking them, thinning and hair loss will continue. This will leave you wondering why you didn’t just get a hair transplant in the first place.

Similarly, in terms of results, nothing quite compares to a crown hair transplant. Using your own hair grafts as a restoration effort, nothing else even comes close to a “real looking result”. As well as chemical treatments, some patients have even tried wigs or scalp micro pigmentation (tattooing). Whilst this may hide the effects of losing hair, patients often come to us complaining about these methods that they have gotten elsewhere.

All of these alternative treatment methods are not performed under the experienced eyes of a doctor either. Investing in a hair transplant for your crown ensures your hair restoration journey is being performed by a safe pair of hands, in a clean clinic – it’s a genuine medical procedure!

How long does it take to see the results?

The timeline to see the final results of a crown hair transplant can vary from patient to patient. However, in general, it typically takes around 12 to 18 months to see the full and final results of a crown hair transplant.

Here’s a breakdown of the timeline:

  1. Immediate Post-Transplant Phase (0-2 weeks): This is the healing phase where we ask all patients to follow the post hair transplant aftercare instructions on what to do and how to do it for the first 14 days in order to heal well and have the best chance at great results.
  2. Early Growth Phase (2-6 months): During this period (and sometimes prior to 2 months) the transplanted hair follicles may shed, which is a normal part of the process. Patients may experience some redness, swelling, and scabbing in the recipient area during this period. After the initial shedding phase, new hair growth typically begins within 2 to 6 months following the transplant. Initially, the new hairs may appear thin and sparse.
  3. Intermediate Growth Phase (6-9 months): By the 6 to 9-month mark, patients usually start to notice more significant growth and increased density in the transplanted area. However, the hair may still be maturing, and the final results are not yet fully evident.
  4. Final Growth and Maturation (12-18 months): Between 12 to 18 months post-transplant, the majority of patients will have experienced substantial growth and thickening of the transplanted hair. The hair follicles have matured, and the final results become more apparent.

During this entire timeline, it’s essential to follow the post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon to optimise the growth and appearance of the transplanted hair. Patience is key, as the process of hair growth and maturation takes time, and individual results may vary based on factors such as genetics and hair quality.

"My experience with Harley Street Clinic was exceptional. I was very apprehensive about getting my FUE procedure done, as one would expect. However, Sara reassured me and was very supportive pre and post-procedure. I am so pleased with the result thus far. The new hairline suits my face, and I cannot wait to see the full results. I must thank everyone at the Harley Street Clinic for their support, guidance, and care."I had an outstanding experience with the Harley Street Clinic. Initially, I had some apprehensions about getting my Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedure done, as I was unsure about how it would turn out. However, Sara, who assisted me throughout the procedure, was very supportive and helped calm my nerves. She provided me with thorough pre and post-procedure guidance, which was extremely helpful. I am delighted with the results I have seen so far. The new hairline suits my face perfectly, and I cannot wait to see the full results in the coming months. The team at the Harley Street Clinic was very supportive, and I felt like I was in good hands throughout the entire process. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone at the clinic for their support, guidance, and care. The experience was very positive, and I would highly recommend the Harley Street Clinic to anyone looking to undergo a similar procedure.

Thank you to the doctor and team. I was well looked after on the day of surgery and I’m really looking forward to the results. Initial anaesthetic injection was the only bit that I didn’t like but other than that, all good. Would recommend. David

To start, their care and procedures are absolutely incredible, if I was to base the review solely on the Dr and nurses I had for my procedure it would be an easy 5 stars. However I am rating only 4 stars, which I would consider slightly generous. I am trans, although very early transition when I had the procedure, and within the consultation I feel I was overlooked of what I wanted. After being asked what I was looking for from the procedure, I said I was trans, and wanted a natural looking feminine hairline (as well as obviously fixing my natural hairline), to which my consultant claimed that a masculine hairline would be easier to look natural. Going along with this, I thought any hairline transplant is better than nothing, and that he was the professional so I should take his advice and bite my tongue. In fairness, I was not wearing make up and was in jeans and a hoodie for the consultation, so maybe what I said just went over his head or maybe he didn’t take me seriously. In hindsight, I wish I didn’t closet myself at the first sign of push back from what I perceived as a medical professional, even talking to my doctor near the end of the procedure I felt comfortable enough to come out to him after what I had initially perceived to be a transphobic clinic (I promise you it’s not), and wish he was the one to do the consultation in the first place. He even said something along the lines of “I’ve done a masculine hairline on you, I wish you had have said something sooner”, and I didn’t want to cause any trouble for my consultant, so I didn’t say anything. All in all, the procedure went perfectly, and has healed really well. Cannot speak any higher of my doctors and nurses (although I have forgotten their names), and although not entirely happy with the hairline I received, it was done perfectly and is 100x better than my natural hairline. To all my trans girlies out there, please make it really clear what you want, look as fem as possible for the consultation, and if they push back at all - don’t let them walk all over you.

I originally took a lot of time researching a hair transplant company within the UK and came across these guys. I have to say that the whole experience has been so smooth from start to finish. Kevin has been nothing but helpful and it was encouraging to know that he only wanted the best for the client. The reason for my hair transplant was traction alopecia and even though I am only 5 days post op I can already see the potential hairline I will have in a few months time. Everything including booking, payment, forms etc was all so easy and straightforward to do with the help of Kevin. The day of the surgery I had my mum come with me and she was able to come into the room to start with before the actual surgery to help choose my hairline and Dr Kalra explained everything not only to me but to my mum also. Then it was onto the actual surgery part of the day and I have to say that while the local anaesthetic injections were pretty painful, the rest of the day was completely relaxing. Dr Kalra and the other staff (sorry I can’t remember their names) totally put me at ease. Everything was explained and if I needed anything all I had to do was ask. Post op I had a lot of bleeding in the donor area which I was worried about but Dr Kalra put my mind at ease straight away. If I had any questions or worries then Dr Kalra and Kevin were always on hand to help. 5 days post op I still have a fair amount of swelling and bruising but it is improving every day and I can’t wait to see results. I’ve booked a PRP session with Dr Kalra for 5 weeks time so I will post another update once that has been done. Thank you to everyone but special thanks to Kevin and Dr Kalra!

The whole experience was very straight forward and professional and the staff were very friendly. I felt I was in safe hands with Dr Kalra and the others who did the surgery and the aftercare process was explained very clearly to me afterwards.
