first haircut after a hair transplant

So, you’ve nearly completed your hair growth journey. You’ve had your hair transplant, you’ve had wait at least six months. What’s next? Your first haircut after your hair transplant. On this page you’ll find all the information you need on: hair transplant aftercare, post-treatment hair growth, and your haircut after a hair transplant.

Haircut After a Hair Transplant: What do I Need to Consider?

Hair loss is one of the most prevalent conditions affecting people across the UK. When hair begins to thin or recede it can often be traumatic for many men and women, causing low self-esteem and psychological distress. Many sufferers choose to combat this with a hair transplant.

A hair transplant can open many new doors for patients, enabling new hairstyles that, only a few months before they could never have dreamed of. In as little as six months, patients are free to style their hair however they please with healthy hair that is highly resistant to further thinning and receding.

With thick hair and a new hairline growing under your bandages, one of the most important things to consider is how you want your first haircut to look. Believe us, it’ll help your aftercare process fly by!

The first thing you should consider is when you will be able to have your haircut after your hair transplant. Try to plan ahead six months into the future, as this is going to be the earliest time you can get a haircut. However, As every hairline grows differently, it’s always better to have a week in mind, as opposed to a particular day.

The next thing you should consider is how you want your hair to look. Your hair is going to look drastically different from how is did before your hair transplant. So, there is no need for a combover or grade 1 all over. Your hair is going to be fuller and thicker. Have a look online at potential hairstyles and see what your friends and partner think!

Finally, you’ll need to consider where your first haircut after your hair transplant is going to take place. We would always recommend you visit a well-established barber with plenty of 5 star reviews on Trip Advisor or Trust Pilot. The last thing you want is a rubbish haircut after your hair transplant.

How Does a Hair Transplant Improve My Hairline?

In many patients, a hair transplant is designed to do two things: restore your hairline and thicken the hair in any thinning areas. The likelihood of experiencing any further hair loss is minimised for years, leaving you to worry about what your next style is going to be.

Before a hair transplant, many patients’ hair will have receded majorly into the temples. This limits the number of hairstyles a person can have. With a receding hairline, many men tend to keep their hair short, favouring a combover. This helps to make a receding hairline look as natural as possible and draw attention away from major receding.

Those suffering with a receding hairline (called “male pattern baldness“) can be seen as having an “m” shaped hairline and this may even develop into a “U” shape in extreme cases. A hair transplant surgery aims to soften this “m” shape, leaving you with a natural-looking “mature” hairline (awaiting link to other article).

With a hair transplant, this receding patch is effectively “filled in”, and made to look natural and thick. This helps to widen your choice of hairstyle from the simple buzz cut, combover, or slicked back look.

With a hair transplant, your restored mature hairline will afford you all of the styles mentioned above, as well as: scissored crop, crew cut, and almost any mid-style. And if you’re from a family with naturally straight hair, you may even be able to grow longer hairstyles.

First Thing’s First: Hair transplant Aftercare

Before we get you carried away, it is first important to remember your aftercare instructions. Before you get the six month green light, you should not forget some of the following information.

In the first two weeks, your main priority is going to be getting your scabs to heal. Be sure to follow your aftercare instructions religiously, as this will help to minimise your recovery time and get you looking your best as quickly as possible.

In the first month, after your hair transplant, your transplanted hair will seemingly grow naturally. However, you shouldn’t get a haircut too soon! This transplanted hair will fall out within six weeks. This is called “shock hair loss”. Don’t worry, this is just the first life cycle of your hair follicles. It’s completely natural for transplanted follicles to do this. Just don’t jump the gun.

Once your hair grows back, be sure to let it grow naturally, and try not to upset your scalp by causing any inflammation or irritation. After your hair transplant you will be provided with special shampoo. Although it may be tempting at3-5 months, avoid any waxes, gels, or putty as this may upset your new hair follicles. Your hair follicles are still very thin at this point.

From month six to nine, you have got the green light for a haircut. However, it’s always wise to inform your barber so they work accordingly. Don’t be alarmed if your hair is growing slowly. Everyone’s hair grows at a different rate.

From twelve months, your transplant area should look completely natural. Your hairline should now be in a stable position and you can implement your new haircut routine and introduce styling products into your self-care routine.

What Haircut Can I Get After a Hair Transplant?

There are a number of different hairstyles you can have after your hair transplant. With new follicles in your temple area, you’ll be able to trial longer hairstyles and not have to worry about covering your receding patches

Many of our patients have now opted to gel their hair up at the front, showing off their brand new hairline. This is just a testament to the natural look of a hair transplant, performed by an experienced surgeon.

As Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinic uses the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method almost exclusively, you will be able to trial any fade or cropped style on the sides. This is because FUE Hair Transplant does not leave any nasty linear scars on your donor area.

What Hairstyles Have Our Hair Transplant Patients Opted For?

There are so many different hairstyles that our patients have decided to go with after their hair transplant. From elegant mid-to-long styles, to professional short back and sides, a patient’s new hairstyle is a great thing to look forward to.

Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics patient Aaron before and after

Before his hair transplant procedure, patient 1 showed major signs of receding and was unable to trial a long style. The addition of transplanted hair into the temples has enabled this patient to style his hair upward, keeping it mid-length and short on the sides.

Patient 2 decided to keep things sleek and simple. This gentleman shows off his new hairline with a shaved look that is suitable for almost any occasion. Whether he’s turning up to work, a special event, or wanting to keep things easy, this style will always be a winner!

Patient 3 has decided to opt for a longer hairstyle on top. As this gentlemen decided to come for a hair transplant early, his post-transplant temples look completely filled in. Keeping things short on the sides, he has decided to go extravagant on top, showing off a natural wave.

If you have had a hair transplant, you’re not limited to any of these three styles. Whilst you may have all gone through a similar hair loss experience, the possibilities are (almost) endless. You have normal hair again!

Can I Style and Dye my Hair After My Hair Transplant?

In time, you can certainly style and dye your hair after your surgery. However, there are a re few things you should consider with your new hair. We recommend that it is always better to be cautious with these practices straight after a hair transplant.

As stated earlier, your hair immediately after a surgery is going to be young, thin, and especially vulnerable to any outside stresses. It may be wise to avoid using any styling products (waxes, gels, pomades) or dyes for at least three months after surgery.

There would be nothing worse than damaging your transplanted hair right after you have taken the initiative to fix your hair loss concern. The last thing you want to do is promote more hair loss.

What Styling Practices Should Be Avoided After Hair Transplants?

This point is mainly relevant to those who wish to have very long hair. After you hair transplant, the health of your transplanted grafts should be your main concern.

If your new hair is long, try to avoid any styles that will enclose it tightly and put excess weight or pressure on your scalp. Traction Alopecia can occur when the hair is continually worn in ponytails or dreadlocks. So, it is probably best to avoid this.

Can A Shaving Machine Be Used After Hair Transplants?

Using a shaving machine in the first few months after hair transplants can cause further hair loss. Clippers and Shavers are a severe way to cut your hair. They lack the gentle gentle movements and clean cut of scissors.

With young and vulnerable hairs, it is always best to let these grow and strengthen before you decide to use a shaving machine. As a general rule of thumb, wait until you see your barber using clippers before you decide to use any. This will help to prevent any potential damage to your transplanted hair follicles.
