How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost in the UK?

The cost of a hair transplant in the UK typically ranges from £3,000 to £15,000, with the average 1,500-graft procedure priced at around £4,750. Our hair transplant prices start from £3,000 for small cases that don’t need many hair follicles to be transplanted as the surface area of hair loss to be covered is small, and can go up to £7,000 for larger cases where the requirement is for a larger number of hair follicles to be transplanted as the surface area of hair loss to be covered is large. Both FUT and DHI are +£1,000 extra.

All initial consultation are free of charge. The price includes the surgeon fees, operating theatre costs, the pre-surgery care as well as the aftercare kit, any medications that are needed and the aftercare follow-up sessions. There is also finance available.

Unlike many UK clinics, every hair transplant at Harley Street is fully surgeon-performed and not delegated to technicians. Our surgeons are GMC and ISHRS members, and operate from CQC-regulated clinics. You’re paying for surgical time, clinical governance, and an aftercare programme that continues for twelve months after your procedure.

Hair Transplant Cost by Number of Grafts

The biggest factor driving the cost of a hair transplant is the number of hair grafts needed to cover the area of loss. A graft is a small cluster of 1–4 hair follicles taken from the donor area at the back of the head and transplanted to areas of thinning or baldness. As a general guide, the more grafts you need, the higher the total cost, however the cost-per-graft typically decreases at higher volumes. Below is our full price list by graft count:

Grafts Harley Street Cost Typical Case Procedure
500 grafts £3,000 – £3,500 Small hairline touch-up or scar repair FUE (1 session)
1,000 grafts £4,000 – £4,500 Early receding hairline, temple points FUE (1 session)
1,500 grafts £4,500 – £5,000 Full hairline restoration FUE or FUT
2,000 grafts £5,500 – £6,000 Hairline + mid-scalp thinning FUE or FUT
2,500 grafts £6,000 – £6,500 Frontal third + mid-scalp FUE or FUT
3,000 grafts £6,500 – £7,000 Full frontal and mid-scalp restoration FUE or FUT
4,000 grafts £10,000 – £11,000 Full scalp restoration (donor permitting) FUE, 2-stage procedure
5,000 grafts £12,000 – £14,000 Advanced hair loss, full coverage FUE, 2-stage procedure

Prices shown are for guidance. Your exact hair transplant cost depends on donor area, graft count, and surgical complexity — confirmed at your free consultation.

Graft numbers rarely come out as round figures. One of our patients was quoted around 1,800 grafts and received exactly 1,804. There have been other patients with a larger difference in grafts quoted and graft numbers on the day. The price ranges above reflect the fact that surgical complexity, donor hair characteristics, and the design of the transplant all affect the final figure. Use our free hair graft calculator for a more personalised estimate, or book a consultation for an exact quote.

Hair Transplant Cost by Procedure Type

The type of procedure that you are eligible for, affects both the cost and the suitability for your specific pattern of hair loss.

FUE Hair Transplant Cost

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is the most popular hair transplant procedure in the UK, and the technique used for most Harley Street procedures. The cost of an FUE hair transplant at our clinics starts from £3,000 for small cases, with the average FUE price sitting at around £5,500 depending on graft count.

FUE involves removing individual hair follicles one at a time from the donor area using a precision punch tool, then implanting them into the recipient site. Because there’s no linear scar and recovery is fast, it’s the go-to procedure for most patients. The FUE cost reflects the surgical time required — a typical 2,000-graft FUE procedure takes a full day and is performed entirely by our surgeon, not delegated to technicians as is common in Turkey and at some UK clinics.

Unshaven and partially-shaven FUE procedures are available for patients who can’t shave their head for personal or professional reasons. These cost slightly more due to the extra time required, and are limited to around 2,000 grafts per session.

FUT Hair Transplant Cost

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), sometimes called the ‘strip method’, involves removing a narrow strip of scalp from the donor area, from which individual grafts are then dissected under microscope. At Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics, the FUT hair transplant cost starts from £4,000, which is typically £500 to £1,000 more than FUE, with an average price of around £6,000.

The higher FUT price reflects the extra resources required: an additional hair technician for graft dissection, specialist microscopes and surgical tools, and the skill required to suture the donor area for a fine, well-concealed linear scar. FUT is particularly suitable for patients with Afro or tightly-curled hair where FUE can be technically challenging as well as patients that don’t want to shave their donor area.

One advantage of FUT is that it preserves the donor area for potential future procedures, making it a strong choice for younger patients with progressive hair loss. The visible linear scar is the main trade-off, although it is typically fine enough to be hidden by hair of grade 2 length or longer.

DHI Hair Transplant Cost

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is a refinement of FUE that uses a specialised implanter tool called a Choi pen, allowing grafts to be extracted and implanted in a single step without the need to create recipient sites in advance. DHI hair transplant cost at Harley Street starts from £4,000, with an average of around £6,000, similar to FUT pricing.

The DHI price is higher than standard FUE because every step of the procedure is fully surgeon-performed from start to finish (technicians only hand tools out), and because the Choi pen itself is an expensive specialist instrument. The technique allows for very precise control of graft angle, depth, and density, making it particularly well-suited to hairline reconstruction and smaller, high-density cases. Because DHI is slower than FUE, the procedure is typically limited to small to small/medium areas rather than medium to large areas.

Beard Transplant Cost

Beard transplant cost at Harley Street HT Clinics starts from £3,000. The average beard transplant costs is between £4,500 and £5,500 depending on the amount of coverage needed, from filling in patchy areas to building a full, dense beard from scratch. A beard transplant uses the same FUE technique as a scalp hair transplant, taking individual follicles from the donor area at the back of the head and implanting them into the beard, moustache, or sideburn areas.

The number of grafts required for a beard transplant typically ranges from 500 for small patchy areas, and can go to more than 3,000 grafts for a full beard restoration. Most beard transplants use between 1,500 and 2,500 grafts, putting the typical cost in the £4,500 to £6,000 range. Because the beard area is smaller and more visible than the scalp, precision in graft angle and direction is critical, something only a skilled, doctor-led procedure can deliver.

Like scalp hair transplants, the price at Harley Street is fully inclusive: surgeon fees, operating theatre, medication, aftercare kit, and all follow-up appointments. There are no hidden costs. Use our beard graft calculator for a more personalised estimate.

Eyebrow Transplant Cost

Eyebrow transplant cost at Harley Street starts from £3,000 for the surface area of 1 eyebrow with most cases falling between £4,000 and £5,500 depending on whether you need a partial fill-in or full eyebrow restoration. Eyebrow transplants can use FUE or FUT (depending if the patients wants to shave their donor area or not) to take follicles from the scalp donor area and then implant them into the brow with careful attention to the natural angle and direction of eyebrow hair growth. A typical eyebrow transplant uses 200 to 400 grafts per brow.

Unshaven Hair Transplant Cost

The cost of an unshaven or partially shaven hair transplant will be slightly higher than normal because of the complexity of the procedure and the extra time and effort required. Also the number of grafts that can be transplanted are limited to 2,000 as the procedure takes longer than a fully shaven one.

What Affects the Cost of a Hair Transplant?

No two hair transplant cases are identical. The price you receive at consultation reflects the specific combination of factors below, all of which your surgeon will assess before giving a final figure.

Number of grafts required

Graft count is the single biggest driver of cost. A graft is a small cluster of one to four hair follicles. The more grafts needed to cover the thinning area with natural density, the longer the procedure and the greater the surgical resource required. A small hairline touch-up may need 800 grafts. A full frontal and crown restoration may need 2,500 or more. Your graft count is determined at consultation based on the surface area of loss and the density target you and your surgeon agree on.

Your stage of hair loss

Surgeons assess male hair loss using the Norwood Scale, which runs from Stage 1 (minimal recession) to Stage 7 (extensive loss across the scalp). Your Norwood stage indicates roughly how many grafts are needed and whether a complete restoration is surgically achievable within the limits of your donor supply.

Norwood Stage Typical Hair Loss Pattern Grafts Required Suitability
Stage 1 to 2 Early temple recession, minimal loss 500 to 1,500 Excellent candidate
Stage 3 Deeper temple recession, early crown thinning 1,500 to 2,500 Excellent candidate
Stage 4 Significant frontal loss and defined crown patch 2,500 to 4,000 Good candidate
Stage 5 Loss bridging front and crown, large surface area 4,000 to 5,000 Suitable, staged approach required
Stage 6 Extensive loss across front, crown, and bridge 7,000+ Partial frontal restoration only
Stage 7 Only a narrow horseshoe of hair remaining 10,000+ Not suitable for transplant surgery

The donor area can typically yield around 6,000 to 7,000 grafts before extraction begins to cause visible thinning of the donor zone itself. At Norwood Stage 6, the demand for grafts significantly exceeds what can be safely harvested, which is why we can only offer partial frontal restoration at that stage and discuss this openly at consultation. Stage 7 patients are not suitable for transplant surgery. Patients at Stages 1 through 5, where graft requirements fall within the safe donor supply, are the strongest candidates and can expect complete, natural-looking results. Read more about hair loss stages and the Norwood Scale.

Surgeon-led vs technician-led procedures

There is a meaningful clinical and financial difference between a procedure performed by a surgeon and one delegated to technicians. At most overseas clinics and at some UK clinics, the surgeon is present only to oversee the incisions while trained technicians carry out extraction and implantation. At Harley Street, every stage of the procedure is performed by the operating surgeon: hairline design, donor assessment, extraction, incision planning, and implantation. This is reflected in the price, and it is the reason our patients see consistent, natural results with a low revision rate. The General Medical Council requires that regulated surgical procedures are performed by qualified doctors, not delegated to unlicensed staff.

How Much Does a Hair Transplant Cost in London?

Hair transplant cost in London typically ranges from £3,500 to £15,000, depending on the clinic, graft count, and whether the procedure is surgeon-led or technician-assisted. Clinics operating in central London, particularly in the Harley Street area, tend to sit toward the upper end of the market due to operating costs, CQC regulatory compliance, and the requirement for GMC-registered surgeons to perform procedures personally.

Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics operate from London and Manchester at identical pricing. Patients outside London are not charged a premium for attending our Manchester clinic, and patients who prefer the London address pay the same rate. This means the choice of location is purely logistical. Both clinics operate under the same clinical governance, the same surgical team, and the same aftercare programme.

UK Hair Transplant vs Turkey

Turkey is the most common destination for patients seeking lower-cost hair transplant surgery, with prices frequently advertised between £1,500 and £3,500 for procedures including flights and accommodation. Understanding why the price is lower helps patients make a properly informed comparison.

The primary reason overseas prices are lower is that procedures are largely performed by technicians rather than surgeons. A Turkish clinic will typically have one or two surgeons overseeing multiple theatres simultaneously, with technicians carrying out extraction, incision-making, and implantation across all of them. In the UK, hair transplant surgery is classified as a regulated surgical procedure and must be performed by a GMC-registered doctor. CQC regulation requires that the operating surgeon is the person performing the critical stages of the procedure. This regulatory framework does not exist in Turkey or most other overseas destinations.

The practical consequence is that the risk profile is different. Technician-led procedures produce less consistent results because extraction angles, graft handling, and incision depth require surgical judgement that technicians are not trained to make. The revision rate for patients returning from Turkey and seeking corrective surgery in the UK is significant. When the cost of a revision procedure is factored in, the total cost of going abroad often exceeds the cost of having the procedure done correctly in the UK from the outset. Our hair transplant repair page covers what can and cannot be corrected following a poor result.

Is a Hair Transplant Available on the NHS?

Hair transplant surgery is not funded by the NHS. Hair loss caused by male or female pattern baldness is classified as a cosmetic concern rather than a medical condition, which means NHS funding is not available regardless of the severity of the loss or the psychological impact it has on the patient.

In very limited circumstances, hair loss caused by specific medical conditions such as alopecia areata may be considered for clinical support, but this relates to non-surgical treatment such as immunotherapy rather than transplant surgery. All hair transplant procedures in the UK are performed privately. Finance options are available at Harley Street to help patients spread the cost into manageable monthly payments, as detailed in the section below.

How Many Grafts Will I Need ?

The number of grafts required for your procedure depends on your Norwood stage, your donor density, and the area you want to restore. However, the upper limit of what can be safely provided is determined by your donor supply, not by what you want to achieve.

The donor area at the back and sides of the scalp can typically yield a total of 6,000 to 7,000 grafts across a lifetime before extraction begins to visibly thin the donor zone. This is not a fixed figure because donor density varies between patients, but it represents the realistic planning ceiling for most people. At Harley Street, we set a maximum of 3,000 grafts per FUE session to protect the donor area and ensure the quality of remaining follicles is not compromised. A minimum of six months is required between FUE sessions, and twelve months is recommended.

For patients who need more than 3,000 grafts, a combination of FUT on day one and FUE on day two can yield between 4,500 and 5,000 grafts in a staged procedure. Because FUT does not reduce the follicular density of the donor zone in the same way FUE does, the full FUE allowance remains available for a future session after the FUT strip heals. This means the total grafts achievable through a combined programme can exceed what is possible through FUE alone.

Patients at Norwood Stage 6 who require approximately 7,000 or more grafts for a complete restoration are typically beyond what the donor area can safely provide. We can offer partial frontal restoration at that stage, but we discuss this honestly at consultation so patients can make a fully informed decision. Stage 7 patients are not suitable for transplant surgery. Read more about how graft planning works on our Norwood Scale page.

Hair Transplant Cost FAQs

A UK hair transplant costs £3,000 to £15,000, with an average price of £4,800 for a 1,500-graft procedure. At Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics, prices start from £3,000 for FUE and £4,000 for FUT or DHI. The final cost depends on the number of grafts required and the type of procedure. A free consultation gives you an exact figure.

No, hair transplants are not funded by the NHS. All hair transplants in the UK are performed privately, which is why we offer flexible finance options to help spread the cost.

Yes. Every initial hair transplant consultation at Harley Street is completely free, with no obligation to proceed. We offer in-person and video consultations across our London and Manchester clinics.

Yes. Every price quoted at Harley Street is fully inclusive. Surgeon fees, operating theatre, all medication, aftercare kit, and follow-up appointments for 12 months after your procedure are included. There are no hidden costs or separate aftercare bills.

Yes. FUT hair transplants typically cost £500 to £1,000 more than FUE because FUT requires additional surgical staff and specialist equipment. At Harley Street, FUE starts from £3,000 and FUT from £4,000.

Hair transplants in Turkey are cheaper primarily because procedures are largely performed by technicians rather than surgeons, with one surgeon often overseeing multiple concurrent procedures. UK clinics like Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinics use a single surgeon performing the entire procedure, which is more expensive but produces more consistent results and carries far lower revision risk.

Patient Testimonials

I didnt know too much about hair transplants so choosing between different companies was quite tricky. So far, all I can say is I made a great choice and everything has gone really well. Sara and James have been super helpful and attentive through email and WhatsApp whenever I have questions, before, during and in aftercare. The procedure itself went well with Dr.Ditta leading and his great team supporting. Everyone made me feel very comfortable. I had the top of my head done with 2750 graphs. Its been two weeks and I am very happy with the progress I can see so far. Its a longer journey for the final results but I would happily recommend based on my my experience. Thank you!

I'm now two weeks post-op after having hairline restoration and feminisation surgery, and so far the whole experience really couldn't have been better. I spent a while looking for a clinic that felt comfortable with gender-affirming hair restoration, rather than somewhere focused almost entirely on male-pattern hair loss. I'm really happy I found this clinic. From the moment I booked, I felt well looked after. Sara and James were always there whenever I had questions or needed help, and they're still supporting me now during recovery. I also really appreciate that the aftercare doesn't end once the procedure is over. I've already had my two-week follow-up and my next one is scheduled for three months. The procedure itself went very smoothly thanks to Dr Elgindi and his team. Everyone was incredibly kind, caring and attentive, which made the whole experience much easier to get through than it otherwise would have been. Dr Elgindi clearly knows exactly what he is doing, explains everything well, and I really appreciated his approach to the donor area, taking care to distribute the extractions rather than overharvesting one section. That was especially important to me, as my donor area mattered just as much as creating the new hairline. Everything is healing beautifully so far and I'm genuinely very happy with how things are progressing and with the direction the result is taking. I can't wait to see the final outcome. This is my experience at two weeks post-op, and I'll be updating my review again once I've reached the final result. Thank you again to Dr Elgindi, Sara, James and the whole team for taking such good care of me.

My experience so far with HSHT Clinics has been excellent. Sara was my first point of contact in the initial consultation. She immediately put me at ease, explained everything in detail and was able to answer all my questions without ambiguity. After that, everything was very well organised and every appointment has been on time and useful. My surgery was performed by Dr Ditta and his team. That was also a great experience (as far as surgery goes). He was very empathetic and took my ideas and opinions into account before proceeding. The recovery was nowhere near as bad as I anticipated - essentially, I was back to normal in two weeks. It’s been 4 months since the surgery and I’ve had a few follow ups with Sara. So far, everything is looking good! Thanks again to the HSHT clinics. Highly recommend at least a consultation with them.

After years of being insecure about my hairline I decided to finally take the plunge and go for a transplant. I had an initial consultation with Sara at the start of May and she was so informative, happy to answer any questions and there was no pressure to book whatsoever. The flexibility with dates was incredible and we settled on a date at the end of June. I had a series of follow up calls with the surgeon in the lead up too which was so helpful and communication was fantastic. On the day, Dr Elgindi and his team were super welcoming and lovely to be around! The procedure was comfortable and a breeze compared to what I was expecting! In terms of results, I am super happy already with the progress so far, I had minimal swelling and by 10 days all the scabs had fallen off and my new hairline looks fabulous! I am super excited to see the full results by 12 months time, and would recommend this clinic to anyone in a heartbeat.

Harley Street Hair Transplant Clinic have been great. As a woman, my hairline has always been a sensitive topic for me, to the point I’d use a ridiculous amount of hairspray before going out to cover everything in the event of a slight breeze. I finally started looking for clinics in early 2025 but struggled to find ones in the UK with experience of making a hairline more feminine. Thankfully, an acquaintance recommended Harley Street HTC. After arranging an initial consultation, they were able to provide me with a loss of four and after photos from other women, How many of our clinics were unable to because, understandably, most of their clientele were men. I have also quite a nervous patient to say the least. However, Sara could not have been more helpful throughout the whole process. She answered all of my many questions promptly and with compassion and care. The actual transplant went as smooth as you could hope for, and the clinical team were super kind when I was nervous about them shaving the donor area. For reference I had my temples and my front hairline done in their central London clinic. During the initial two week recovery periods, they went over and above answering my many questions promptly and calming my anxieties around doing different processes correctly. Since then, they’ve checked in on me every three months for the past year, where I’ve met with Sara to discuss regrowth and upkeep. As, unlike most looking to get a hair transplant, I had quite long hair already, I’ll be honest and say that there were some periods where my overall hair did not look great due to the drastically different lengths. However, that could not be helped unless I wanted to shave my whole head and start from scratch. I am happy to report that after 12 months, my donor area is blending in perfectly with the rest of my hair. Additionally, my recipient area has seen growth of about 4 or 5 inches and is very dense and full. Although I didn’t have the widest area done, I’m still over the moon with my results. Harley Street HTC has been fantastic throughout and I couldn’t recommend them enough!
